Day 21 - Lewisport, Botwood, Grand Falls
This morning we headed to the Twillingate Lighthouse and had our coffee. They have a lovely lookout area over the ocean. This point at Twillingate was so beautiful. The first picture captures it a bit. We saw many, many whales coming up to breathe there. We walked a trail along the top of the cliffs and continued to watch the whales. Every once in a while we could see their backs come out of the water and once we saw one breach. We're not sure if they were fin or minke whales. Too far away to tell, but very nice to watch.
Then we headed to Lewisport and then to Botwood where they had a seaplane station during WWII which included an island full of bunkers where they stored ammo. There were 10,000 soldiers stationed there during the war. Their job was to spot and track German u-boats.
We then carried on to Grand Falls and are now camped beside the Exploit River which is the premier salmon river in Newfoundland. Unfortunately, the fish ladder closed on September 3, so we missed the salmon run. We may visit the Salmonid Interpretation Centre tomorrow.
