Day 18 - Gander and Fogo Island

This morning we left Terra Nova and headed to Gander.  It was about 1 hour away.  We stopped for coffee at the Joey Smallwood Lookout and also bought some local vegetables there.

In Gander we stopped at the Aviation Museam.  Thet had 4 planes outside on display and then a really nice display inside about the building of the Gander Airport in the 1930s.  There was access to the site by rail and it was chosen because of it's proximity to Gander Lake for sea planes and it was a very flat spot.  The airport was built very quickly and then once the war started was really built up,  It housed American, Canadian and British military personnel as well as railway workers and locals.  After the war it was still a very busy hub because all planes had to land to be refueled.  With the advent of jet planes, the need no longer existsed and it was pretty quiet after that.  One woman remarked that she thought she saw a tumble weed blowing down the runway.

We then had lunch at A & W and did some groceries at Dominion.

Our next destination was the ferry for Fogo Island.  We timed it just right, the ferry was coming in while we were paying.  It was a 1 hour ferry ride to Fogo Island.  We drove across the island to Fogo and are camped at Brimstone Head RV Park right on the waterfront.  We have spent an enjoyable evening watching boats fishing in the water.  We have met our fellow campers and some locals who were here fishing.  I think pretty much everyone from the town has driven through the park, I think to watch the sunset, but it might be to see who's here.  Haha

We even had a nice video talk with Laura, Matt, Emma, Henry and Theo this evening.  It was good to catch up.
