Day 14 - Winterton/Heart's Content
This morning we started off with going to Winterton to visit the wooden boat building museum. It was really interesting. It explained about how each town built their own specific kind of punt. The skill was just passed down from generation to generation. There were no plans at all. Sometimes you did inherit a 3 piece mold from your father. They were also tweaked all the time to try to make improvements. The punt was used for everything from fishing to going to church with the family. There were no roads. There were also dorys, motor boats and speed boats.
Then we stopped at Heart's Content to see the Trans Atlantic Telegraph Cable Station. In 1866 the first cable was strung from Ireland to Heart's Content. Eventually there were a total of 6 cables and 300 employees of the station. They built housing for their employees as well as recreational facilities. During both the first and second world wars they were extremely busy. The station closed down in 1965.
We carried on to Clarenville which is located on the Bonavista Peninsula. We just left the Avalon Peninsula. We are staying for the night in Dun Rov'in RV Park in Lethbridge.
